Box office collection: 'The Angry Birds' records better opening day earnings than 'Phobia,' Veerappan' and 'Waiting

Hollywood has taken over Bollywood at the box office once again. Hollywood film "The Angry Birds" opening day box office collection is better than the combined collection of three new releases "Phobia," "Waiting" and "Veerappan."
"The Angry Birds," which took off with mixed to negative reviews, minted Rs. 2.16 crore from the Indian box office. The 3D computer-animated action-adventure comedy film had a good opening because it is based on the popular video game series "Angry Birds.
"Hollywood dominates yet again... #TheAngryBirdsMovie Fri ₹ 2.16 cr nett. India biz," trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted.
While "The Angry Birds" received mixed reviews, Bollywood film "Phobia," "Waiting" and "Veerappan" opened to mixed to good reviews, but failed to engage moviegoers at the box office.
"Phobia" features Radhika Apte in the lead role and the storyline focuses on agoraphobia – fear of wide, open spaces. "Waiting" is a comedy drama featuring Naseeruddin Shah and Kalki Koechlin in the lead role, while "Veerappan," which is a biographical film based on the life of the notorious bandit Veerappan, featured Sandeep Bharadwaj in the titular role.
Since the hype was low, the opening day occupancy also reflected the same, which resulted in disastrous collection. According to Koimoi.com, none of the three films managed to earn even Rs. 1 crore from the domestic box office.
This is not the first time a Hollywood film dominated the Indian box office, despite a plethora of new releases. "The Jungle Book," "X-Men: Apocalypse" and "Captain America: Civil War" ruled at the Indian box office, while Bollywood films trailed behind them.
[1 lakh = 100,000 | 1 crore = 10 million | 100 crore = 1 billion]
